Yoga Teacher Insurance - Some Issues

The issue of insurance is a matter of immense debate among Yoga teachers. There are many complexities that arise for yoga teacher insurance indeed.

The most pressing question is to whether to purchase liability insurance or not. There are yoga teachers working in different sectors like gyms, studios, schools and colleges, hospitals, as personal trainer and in many organizations. Generally for yoga teachers working in bigger organizations like gyms and studios purchasing liability insurances is a must. However yoga teachers working for small organizations and institutions may or may not seek liability insurance as important for them.

But all those yoga teachers who believe that insurance is not required for them shall understand that danger comes without giving you any kind of warning. You never know what will happen to you tomorrow. Liability insurance protects you from lawsuits in case of crisis.

There are several organizations or companies that provide insurances for yoga teachers. Some are general liability insurances, while others cover yoga therapy as well as hands-on adjustments. There are even some which cover only classroom instruction. So it is prudent that yoga teachers check out the provisions of the insurance before taking up anyone to see whether they are protected in all aspects or not.

There is another issue which Yoga teachers often face. There are many yoga teachers who are also licensed health care provider like in medicine, physical therapy, psychology, acupuncture, massage therapy or chiropractic care. So whether their professional liability insurance does also cover yoga teaching is a matter of confusion.

Here the first thing to remember is that different health care providers operate under different laws. Like in the case of physicians he is authorized to detect and treat diseases of people. And Non- Physicians who are related to conventional health care and complementary or alternative medications like the psychologist or the chiropractors have far more limited scope. This scope of practice is defined by the state or the government of the particular place you live in. So whether your professional liability insurance will cover your yoga teaching or not will depend on the scope that a particular state allows.

So general health care providers who are also yoga teachers must be mindful of what their insurance offers and to what extent their insurance covers them. In other words this professional with dual activities should check whether their professional liability insurance covers yoga activities or not.

As a rule of thumb in most of the places general liability insurance for a physiologist, psychologist and chiropractor do not cover yoga activities. It is very rare.

Besides the premium for insurances are also not that high when you compare with malpractice premiums which you can have if any lawsuit is filed against you. So it is prudent for those involved in yoga teaching either directly or as a supplementary activity to get yoga teacher insurance for themselves to protect them against any kind of lawsuits.
